For one day each autumn, the dahlia fields belong to you.

A bucket and shears will be waiting. From there, you step into rows still at their most abundant—dinner plates and pompons, warm creams and pale blushes, burnished corals, saturated reds, and flowers whose colors resist an easy name.

For ninety minutes, there is no prescribed route and no one else deciding what belongs together. You move through the field at your own pace, cutting whatever draws you closer: a perfectly composed bloom, one that is gloriously unruly, an unexpected color combination, or a flower illuminated by the low October sun.

The bucket becomes part arrangement, part record of what you noticed.

It also fills far more quickly than most people expect. By the end, dahlias rise above the rim and spill over its sides—an extravagant armful shaped entirely by your own eye. There's more abundance than you could have possibly imagined.

After cutting, there is another half hour to wander the farm. Explore the renovated barns, look at the old farm equipment, or follow the stream and sit for a while. Autumn moves quickly here. This is a chance to step inside it before the fields are turn over again.

The flowers will eventually fade. The experience of standing among thousands of them, choosing one stem at a time, remains forever.

• For two people: One 5-gallon bucket and a pair of shears provided for your harvest.

• Ages: 12 and older; minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

• Footwear: Boots or sturdy shoes are essential; fields are uneven and not suited to wheelchairs or strollers.

• Pets: We love them, but they’ll need to sit this one out.

• Timeliness: Your reservation is for a set time slot; late arrivals will end at the scheduled time.
