A Morning Among Dahlias: Half-Day Workshop
Saturday, October 2, 2025 | 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
There is no substitute for standing in a field of dahlias at the height of their season.
Books are helpful. Videos have their place. But there comes a point when the questions become too specific, too nuanced, and too dependent on seeing the plant in front of you. Why is one variety thriving while another, planted only feet away, struggles? Why are buds aborting? Why are stems short? Why do some plants produce armloads of flowers while others seem determined not to bloom?
They come from the field.
Join Bear Creek Farm founder Debra Kaye for an intensive morning devoted entirely to understanding dahlias—not as theory, but as living plants. Walking through thousands of blooms at their autumn peak, you'll learn how experienced growers read a plant long before problems become obvious and how small changes in timing, watering, fertility, spacing, and observation can transform an entire season.
This is a workshop built around the questions gardeners actually ask and the lessons that only years of growing can teach.
During the Morning You'll Learn
- Pinching, staking, watering, and fertilizing—what matters, what doesn't, and why.
- How to diagnose common problems before they become serious.
- When to harvest for the longest vase life.
- How weather, soil, and timing influence flowering far more than most gardeners realize.
- The practical techniques Bear Creek Farm uses after growing thousands of dahlias each season.
Throughout the morning, you'll have ample opportunity to ask questions—whether you're growing six plants in your backyard or several hundred in a cutting garden.
Your Experience Includes
- A guided walking tour through Bear Creek Farm's dahlia fields at peak bloom.
- A comprehensive classroom session with plenty of time for discussion and questions.
- A detailed take-home guide filled with practical growing information.
- An exclusive workshop discount on next season's Bear Creek Farm dahlia tubers.
- A small class size that encourages conversation and individual attention.
Who This Is For
This workshop is designed for gardeners who want to grow better dahlias—not simply more of them.
Whether you're planting your first tubers, designing cutting gardens, creating flowers for weddings, or growing on a larger scale, you'll leave with practical knowledge that can be applied immediately and confidence that only comes from understanding why a plant behaves the way it does.
By early October, the dahlias are giving their finest performance of the year. There is no better time to see what healthy plants look like, compare varieties side by side, and learn directly in the place where those lessons were earned.
Come ready to learn, but also to feel—something about beauty, about resilience, and about what it means to be held in the company of dahlias as they give everything they have before the frost arrives.
