Peony Workshop

Yay our very first peony workshop!

Of course Covid-19 safe and socially-distant, this one-day peony session will be at our farm in the beautiful, historic Hudson Valley, New York. Here’s a chance to be in the open air, breathe freely, and dig deep into peonies. Bear Creek Farm is an innovative, fashion-forward flower farm. Our eclectic team combines the essence of New York City passion, ingenuity and work ethic to lovingly cultivate each field and craft every charming nook. We are so honored that others have taken notice. New York Magazine awarded us Best Dahlias, LuxLife named us Best Wedding Floral Design and Global Media ranked us Best Dahlia & Tall Plant Agri-Business in North America. Along with this, our barn was a 2018 HGTV Faces of Design finalist and second place winner in Westchester Home Magazine.

The exploration-packed workshop is on Saturday June 12, 2021. We delight sharing our passion for flowers in this splendid atmosphere that nurtures creativity and invention. Our leading-edge workshop will benefit flower lovers of any experience level. Our farm is not open to the public so this is a real opportunity to experience its beauty, see its operation and learn about the flow, movement and texture of flower arranging from industry star and fashion designers go-to, Taylor Patterson.

What Will be Featured?

Included in this jam-packed, full day will be a personalized tour of our welcoming farm from a springtime point-of-view, followed by two classes that dive into peonies. Debra will lead a detailed discussion that provides guidance on how to grow and harvest peonies. Giving peonies a good start early in their life can make an extraordinary difference in the type of bloom one experiences. Though easy to grow, there are just a few tips that can make all the difference in the plant’s long life.

In the afternoon renowned floral designer Taylor Patterson of Fox Fodder Farm will lead a floral arranging workshop that takes full advantage of the bounty this season (and Bear Creek Farm) provides. Fox Fodder Farm has been an influential fixture in the NYC floral design scene for the past 10 years and has been the go-to florist for designer brands such as Chanel, Hermes, and Ulla Johnson.

Taylor will be sharing her approach to designing, with peonies specifically in mind. Using both large and smaller blooms, the workshop will focus on how to create variations in depth and texture as well as establishing and considering beautiful color palettes. Taylor’s techniques aim to reveal that with a few tweaks, and considerations, as well as the right material choice, everyone is capable of creating magic.

Named one of the country’s top 25 Floral Floral designers by Martha Stewart, Taylor’s work has regularly been featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, as well as other publications.

Participation is strictly limited so the entire experience will be personal and intimate.

Glance at the Day

The day will begin with a short springtime tour of Bear Creek FarmThe dwellings are careful, award-winning restorations of historic architecture. Both gardens and farm areas are integrated together to form a homogenous feel to the property.  As we stroll among the blooms, you’ll learn about our growing techniques, which include an amalgamation of old and new. You’ll see features in progress such as woodland restorations and learn how these environments are renewed.

Following the tour, Debra’s talk will concentrate on growing peonies, getting a great start, special tips, why some varieties require different maintenance, the decisions we made, why they may or may not be right for you, questions and answers.

Next up will be lunch that will charge your brilliant mind for what’s to come.

Lunch is not only the time to get ready for the day’s centerpiece event, but a great moment to forge new friendships with those who love flowers and appreciate the beauty of art. When Debra has attended other flower events, she have found new friends who are incredibly helpful and created fabulous friendships.

In the afternoon, Taylor will discuss her approach to design, what she loves about the opportunities and challenges that designing with peonies provide and will lead a demonstration offering tips and tricks to creating a beautiful (and playful) arrangement. Taylor pushes her students to seek out the whimsy when designing and to push their ideas of what an arrangement should or should not look like. “Creating an arrangement however simple or complex is an extension of oneself. It’s an opportunity to be true to your creative self and to your tastes”

Whether you’re a hobbyist or have any level of flower arranging experience, seeing and learning the tricks of the trade from amazing Taylor Patterson will take your creativity and design skills to the next level. When you learn from a top pro, you’ll find tips that you never knew existed to make composition and arranging so much easier!

Afterward you will design your own arrangement.  No need to worry about supplies as everything will be provided for you!

Complete your day with photo memories of the event. A professional photographer will take pictures of your work.

Q & A

Q: I want to bring my camera to record videos so I can rewatch them later. Is that ok?
A: So sorry but video recording of any kind is strictly prohibited during our workshop.

Q: If we are doing hands-on design, will you critique our work and give feedback/guidance?
A: The group is small enabling lots of one-on-one connections. There will be feedback on the pieces you create, but also respect for your own creativity and design style. We’ll make suggestions on how you can improve your design while staying true to the style you favor.

Q: What does the fee include?
A: All the flowers plus vase, knife and other materials to create a truly smashing design. It also includes the expert’s fees, workbook, food, rentals and staff we need to make the day a phenomenal success. It is truly an extraordinary opportunity.

Q: What is the Cancellation and Refund Policy?
A: Just like a client booking a wedding or another event, we base our business on booked events and plan accordingly. With that, this workshop is not cancellable, non-transferable and non-refundable. While we understand that life happens sometimes, please verify that you can 100% attend the workshop before you register. Check all travel aspects. We will not be able to refund you for any monies paid at any point, for any reason. Our course involves staffing, vendors, rentals, product, and so many other elements that are based on a “by attendant” basis. We are charged based on the number of people that register and we are also unable to make cancellations with said vendors on our end, so this course is non-refundable.

Q: Will you offer recommendations on local attractions and restaurants?
A: Yes, in your welcome packet you will receive an email with things to do in the area along with recommended bed and breakfasts. Of course, as an historic area, there are also quite a lot of AirBnb’s from which to choose.
